DE AS VAN DE HERINNERING; portret van de dichter/arts Jit Narain

In his poems the Hindu poet and doctor Jit Narain describes his ancestors' migration from India to Suriname. His grandparents' fate and his own migration from Suriname to the Netherlands and back to Suriname in the early nineties of the last century are the key themes in his work. In Suriname he settled in the Saramacca district as a doctor and a farmer. In this film Jit Narain is followed in his practice with attached outpatient clinic and a while cultivating his land. These scenes are alternated with Narain's poems, set to music and sang by himself, which articulate his and his forebears' uprootedness.

John Albert Jansen (1954) lived and worked in Berlin for some time after studying Literature Theory in Amsterdam. There, he took a directing course and started his career as a journalist and programme-maker for television. He made several documentaries since 1992, amongst others about the authors John Berger, Bohumil Hrabal and Michael Slory.
